In our whole school assembly this week, we found out about Refugee Week (15th-21st June) and Refugee Day (20th June). We looked at what the week was and why it was celebrated. We were also curious to find out about different children's stories about how they or members of their family had needed to leave their home country and find sanctuary elsewhere. We noted that various members of our school community have had this experience and though about how we try to use the British Values and our school values to help us provide a welcoming environment to everyone who is new to our school community.

Amplify Parent and Carer Survey

Please find below a link to this year's parents and carers survey. You will be able to add your responses to the survey until Monday 29th June at 9.00am. 

The form asks you about your experience of your child's education. The responses are treated anonymously and confidentially to identify what we are doing well and what we can do better. If you have more than one child at school, you only need to complete the survey once. This survey is administered by our wider trust and is the same across all of our schools. It is used to inform decision making in our school and so the more responses we receive the more useful the survey is to us.

Year 5 Amplify Sports Day

On Wednesday, Year 5 took part in Amplify's annual sports day at Headley Park Primary School. Everyone was really involved in a range of activities in the morning from football to howler and field hockey to curling. In the afternoon, there was a tug of war between the school and individual running races. It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm and support brought by all the children.

Year 6 Careers Fair 

Our Year 6 pupils enjoyed an exciting and inspiring trip to St Werburgh’s Primary School, where they attended a careers fair. After travelling by train, they explored a wide range of career paths by speaking with professionals from STEM industries, the arts, music, publishing and even a magician! The experience gave the children a valuable insight into the many different opportunities available to them, encouraged them to ask thoughtful questions and inspired them to start thinking about their own future aspirations.  

Sports Week Including VPPS Sports Day

We will be celebrating National Sports Week from Monday 22nd - Friday 26th June. During this week, the children will be taking part in various sports during the day as well as their normal P.E. lessons. For this week, please send your child to school wearing their P.E. kit. This must follow the school P.E. kit policy (no football shirts etc.) and a link can be found below as a reminder.

Year 5 7 6 Quadkids Event

On Monday, eight children from Year 5 & 6 participated in a Quadkids event held at Ashton Park School. They all had to compete in four events: 75m sprint, 600m run, howler throw and standing long jump. The scores for each person were combined together to add to the team total. Amongst some incredibly tough competition, the children demonstrated fantastic determination and competed admirably. They should be very proud of their efforts! 

Y5 Zero Carbon Schools Project

This week, Y5 have been planting dozens of wildlife friendly plants and wildflowers, including oxygenating pond plants. They worked really hard and will continue to regenerate the outdoor classroom to improve nature in the coming weeks. On the 20th July we will be holding an open garden to showcase all their hard work and all of the school community are welcome.

New Planter for Playground 1

Earlier this year, we won a grant from the Ovo Foundation Nature Prize. We have used the money to create a 4th 'SUDS' planter on Playground 1. SUDS stands for Sustainable Urban Drainage System and the planters are designed to slow rainfall and reduce flooding as well as enhancing spaces for people and wildlife. Mulberry Class had a great time putting in all the layers and adding the plants!

Royal British Legion & ArtLab Inspire

Bristol Students Through Creative Remembrance project

The Royal British Legion (RBL), in partnership with ArtLab, has launched a new community art initiative in Bristol to bring young people’s creativity to the forefront. The project sees five local schools collaborating on an art project which will feature as part of an immersive exhibition, Remembered Heroes, this July.

Through this creative project, students from across the schools have been exploring remembrance in a creative and inclusive way - discovering stories from diverse communities, reflecting on service and sacrifice, and expressing what remembrance means today.  

Delivered through assemblies and hands-on workshops, led by ArtLab, the project has encouraged young people to engage with themes of remembrance, identity and cultural heritage. Known for their inspiring work with young people, ArtLab has guided the students in producing powerful, thought-provoking pieces using a wide range of artistic techniques, including fabric work, drawing, sewing, collage, printmaking, and resin art.

Drawing inspiration from renowned artists including Christian Boltanski, John Piper and Chitra Merchant, the students have created a series of visually compelling installations.  These unique works will be open to the public at Circomedia in Bristol from 10th–11th July.

Visitors can expect a transformative experience as artwork is suspended from the ceilings of the historic church venue, creating a striking visual landscape designed to provoke reflection and conversation.  

This collaboration stands as a powerful example of the RBL’s commitment to ensuring remembrance transcends generations and remains relevant, inclusive and inspiring for years to come.
