Welcome back to school and Happy New Year!

In our whole school assembly this week, we looked at how the arrival of a new year is celebrated all around the world. We considered how different cultures or religions mark the changing of a year at different times depending on the calendar they use. We also noted that the day we were holding the assembly was also Christmas Day in the Christian Orthodox tradition.  Finally, we also thought about that, regardless of when and how it is celebrated, in most cultures and traditions new year is a time to look forward and make resolutions for the following year.

The children have made a great start to the new year. I showed a number of  prospective new parents around the school this week. They were very impressed at how calm and focused the children were in their lessons so soon after coming back to school.

This brilliant attitude from all of our children has made it even harder than usual for teachers to spot our Values Certificate winners this week. However after some difficult decisions certificates were awarded to Finley, Jesse, Will, Archie, Will, Idris, Olivia, Eliza, Evan, Ali and William. Well done everyone!

January Census Day

Thursday 16th January is School Census Day. The number of school meals we serve that day affects the funding we receive from the government next year. Therefore it would help the school, if as many children could have a school meal on Thursday (it will be Fish Fingers)! So even if your child normally has packed lunch, please sign them up for a school meal on Thursday - it will be a great help to us as it can make a big difference to the funding we get for the children. (Remember all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are entitled to free lunches every day).

Attendance and Punctuality

Our school attendance is currently 94.98% at the end of the last term.  This is below our school and national target.  During assembly this week we talked to the children about a whole school resolution to work together to improve attendance and punctuality so that all children are in school and ready to learn, have fun and be with their friends.

We announced our termly attendance prizes for Term 2.  Juniper class won best Attendance for Term 2 with 97.4% and Hazel class won the award for the class with the least number of late marks.  Well done to Hazel and Juniper class.  These classes win a £30 prize to spend on wet play games, new books or a class treat that the children and teacher decide on together.

Attendance below 90%

If your child's attendance record shows that their attendance since September has fallen below 90% you will be notified of this next week.  Please do not be alarmed by this.  Schools have a duty to report on attendance to parents and inform them when attendance falls below a certain threshold (90%.)  There will be individual reasons why your child has not been in school and you may well have already discussed these with us.  If you receive this notification and would like a discussion about how to support you and your child to raise their attendance please speak to Miss Mullen or Mrs Jackson on the gate about this or make an appointment with the school office.  We are here to help you.
