It has been a purposeful and calm first full week back- it's almost as though we have never been away!

This week in our values assembly we thought about the idea of democracy. We considered how it is used to govern Britain and how we use voting and elections in other circumstances, such as electing our school council.  We also used one of our Lyfta Storyworlds to visit Awra Amba in Ethiopia to see how they had organised their democratic process to ensure everybody in their community had an equal voice. Next Monday, it will be International Day of Democracy, when we will start the process of electing our class councillors, with the election taking place the following week.

Values certificate winners this week were Maya, Barnaby, Toby, Abbey, Gwen, Taylor, Abdullahi, Lexi, Izzy, Kayleb, Phoebe and Arezo. Well done, all of you!

Art on the Hill

On Saturday 4th October, we will once again be opening the school to display the fantastic artwork created by our children.

This year will be the biggest exhibition yet! Over the next few weeks, children from Reception all the way to Year 6 will be participating in workshops to produce art for the show. These workshops will be run by Lucy (also a parent in our school) and Beth from ArtLab who have once again developed some very ambitious plans for what the children will create.

Next week,  the workshops will be:

Monday 15th: Year 2

Tuesday 16th: Year 3 and Year 1

Thursday 18th: Year 5 and Year 4

The following week, the workshops will be:

Monday 22rd: Year 4 and Year 5

Tuesday 23th: Year 6 and Year 3

Thursday 25th: Year 6, Year 3 and Year 4

In the last week, the workshops will be:

Monday 29th: Reception and Year 1

Tuesday 30th: Reception, Year 5 and Year 6

The children are likely to be using a lot of paint on some large surfaces during the workshops. On the day your child is doing their workshop, to prevent uniforms being covered in paint, they can bring in some old clothes (that you don't mind getting paint on!) to change into during the workshop.

Watch this space for some sneak previews as the art work progresses over the next couple of weeks...

Butterfly Conservation

Over the past year, we have worked with Butterfly Conservation, with funding from the National Lottery, to improve our school grounds for pollinators. We have loved our new plants and planters along with the butterflies and other insects! In the Summer term, our wonderful Green Team made a film with the charity to showcase their Wild Spaces project - you can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wr_bFhubgC4

Well done Green Team for being brilliant ambassadors for our school and for the butterflies and moths!

South Bristol Liveable Neighbourhoods

The consultation on the proposals for South Bristol Liveable Neighbourhoods (SBLN) is now live. The survey closes on Thursday 30 October and can be accessed here. Bristol City Council are inviting parents to tell them what you think about new proposals.

Liveable Neighbourhoods aim to make streets healthier, more accessible and more pleasant by:

·putting people first – reducing traffic and lowering vehicle speeds to create safer, more welcoming and accessible streets. Vehicles would still be able to access all properties at any time, though some routes may change

·prioritising health – improving air quality and allowing more people to choose physically active travel options, like walking and cycling, and be safe doing so

·making better community spaces – designing calmer streets and greener areas where people can relax, children can play, and families feel safe travelling to school

You can view the feedback from last year’s engagement in the SBLN Engagement Report.

Chess Club at Bedminster Library

Mondays 4-5pm starting on 15th September for 6 weeks

Chess Clubs in Bristol Libraries are volunteer-run after-school clubs. Aimed at children 8-17 year-old, Chess Clubs are fun, creative and support each person in understanding the basic rules of chess. Players will play in pairs with the Chess Club Volunteer Facilitator or another player of a similar age and/or skills and will share successes. The course will teach children much more than just how to play chess, it will show them how to use strategic thinking and socialising with likeminded people.

The course is free, but spaces are limited.

There is a restriction on the number of members we can accommodate at the Chess Club, so available places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
