Friday 9th May 2025

We had two whole school assemblies this week that used the theme of the national commemorations of the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day. On Tuesday we explored the theme of being curious about the past to understand the significance of VE Day, what events were taking place and why they had been chosen. On VE Day itself, our assembly focussed on how we were commemorating the day and the experience of children at VPPS during the Second World.

We are very lucky to have records of the school that go back over 125 years, including copies of former Headteachers' log books. We looked at excerpts from these to find out about VPPS children's experience of the outbreak of war, the Bristol Blitz, evacuation and the peace celebrations at the end of the war. We collated some of these excerpts and put them beside a display of remembrance poppies the children have made during the week on a display board near the exit gate, if you would like to see them as well.

At the end of the week, the children who had demonstrated the school value of curiosity during the week were presented with Values Certificates. Well done Rex, Willow, Keion, Ewan, Ollie, Zuko, Tari, Joseph, Will, Harrison and Toby.

CST Poetry Performance

Earlier this week, some of our Year 3 pupils visited Creswell theatre and engaged in performance poetry and creative expression.

The day featured inspiring writing workshops and the chance to meet Martin Kiszko, the green poet of the UK. Martin’s energy and insight sparked imagination as students explored themes, rhythm, and performance techniques in poetry with the theme 'environment and sustainability'. Pupils worked together to write their own poems and then took to the stage to perform their pieces with confidence and passion. It was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate young voices, creativity, and the power of poetry across our Trust.

Triathlon

Victoria Park Primary had a huge representation at the schools triathlon this weekend. It was a fantastic day and there was huge support for all the teams. All teams were amazing showing such team spirit and support!

As you may be aware VPPS had 20 teams from years 3-6 complete the restless development triathlon on Sunday at Clifton College, raising thousands for charity. It was such a wonderful day, and the children did so well, they all tried their hardest with some fantastic achievements and really supported everyone who took part.

Attendance and Punctuality

Congratulations to Hazel and Lime class who had no children late to school last week.

We are half way through term 5 now so we need everyone to have a big push on attendance over the coming weeks so that we can reach our school target of 96% attendance by the end of the year.

Walk to School Week 19-23 May

Walk To School Week is a week of walking and wheeling to encourage school communities to actively travel to school. We are already part of the School Streets scheme which has made our journeys to and from school quieter, safer and healthier.

Shoesday - Tuesday 20th May

We would love children to take part in Shoesday and accessorise their shoes for a walk or wheel to school!

Bristol Walk Fest

May is National Walking Month and Bristol is running Bristol Walk Fest. There's loads of interesting walks and activities so why not pop your shoes on and go for a stroll!: https://www.bristolwalkfest.com/

Year Group Active Travel Activities

  • Year 1 will be taking part in scooter skills lessons next term.
  • Year 3 and 4 had an exciting theatre show in term 4 about road safety, reminding them to "stop, look, listen, think".
  • Year 5 are taking part in a pedometer challenge this week to see how many steps they can get into a school day.
  • Year 6 will be planning safe routes to their new secondary schools in term 6.

Green Team

In school for the rest of the year, we will be working on saving electricity and saving energy. We have asked everyone to remember to remind your teachers to properly turn off the switches and whiteboards. We have been working very hard to save energy around school. Please try and do the same at home. Last year we noticed we used enough energy to run a modern television for 205 years. Will you try to be more careful at home?

Appeal for Participants to Showcase Their Career at St Werburgh's Careers Fayre

Would any parents or carers be willing to "exhibit" their career at the St Werburgh's Primary School Careers Fayre on Tuesday 17th June?

This is a whole Trust event that our Year 6s are also due to attend. It has run for a number of years and is very special opportunity for the children. We would like a range of careers to be represented at the event, so Helen Faulkner (St Werburgh's Headteacher) has written a request for any parents or carers across the Trust who might be interested in "exhibiting" their career at the event to contact her. If you think you might be able to help, further details are below:

Dear parents and carers,

We have organised a careers fair at St Werburgh’s Primary School for a number of years.  Each one is different but aims to be equally inspiring.  We ask you to give up a morning to come and be at St Werburgh’s Primary, to talk to groups of Year 6 children as they walk around the ‘fair’ that we set up in our school entrance space, hall and outdoor courtyard.

The children will be from our Year 6 classes, across our CST (Cathedral Schools Trust) primary schools.  These are children aged 10 or 11 in their last year of primary school.

We will have boards and tables available and you may wish to bring some props or information/signage to help demonstrate what you do.  The most important thing, however, is a willingness to share and to answer questions.  We will also make sure that you have some refreshments provided.

We arrange this every year as part of our aim to inspire children to work hard and to aim high.  We are very conscious that children of primary school age may only really know about the careers that their parents and teachers have, or maybe those they see in the media or online.  As an inner city and very diverse school, we are conscious of the phrase “you can’t be what you can’t see.” We want to give our children the chance to meet different people from a breadth of different jobs so that they can be inspired and find out how you chose your career and the qualifications/experience you needed, as well as what you do on a daily basis - the best bits and maybe those you don’t enjoy so much too.  Our children will really benefit from meeting you and the range of role models we hope to join us in the morning of Tuesday 17th June.

Please confirm to let us know if you will be able to attend. Thank you very much for considering helping us.

SEND Coffee Morning

Bristol Parent carers will be holding a coffee morning in school on Wednesday 14th May 9-10.00. Bristol Parent carers Forum hosts coffee mornings from schools for parent carers of children and young adults that have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

There is no need to book but if you can, that is helpful. Please come along for a chat with our volunteers and other families who “get it”. We are happy to talk through any problems or issues you are facing over a nice cup of tea (or coffee!) and you can find out more information on what support is available locally for your child or a child you care for.

If you need additional support to access this coffee morning such as support with English or other adjustments, please let us know.

An important role of the Parent Carer Forum is to hear about the experiences of parent carers in Bristol. We would like to hear from you about your experiences with SEND services so that we can be sure that your voice is heard and that we can shape the future of SEND services together.

Volunteer at Lifeskills

Discover Lifeskills. A safety adventure like no other. Where young people don’t just learn about safety – they experience it.

Lifeskills is a much-loved Bristol charity that’s been part of the community for over 25 years. Based at the Create Centre in South Bristol, we welcome over 10,000 Year 6 pupils each year to our realistic, interactive safety village—where they learn how to handle everyday dangers with confidence, from road and railway safety to household hazards, basic first aid, and making emergency 999 calls.

We rely entirely on volunteers to keep the centre running, and right now we urgently need more help. Many schools are hoping to visit, but without enough volunteer guides, we simply can’t accommodate them all. That’s why we’re asking schools to share this opportunity.

Volunteering at Lifeskills offers a unique opportunity to:

  • Make a difference in children’s lives

  • Connect with your community

  • Give a little of your time to help children live safer, happier, and more independent lives

  • Guide small groups through our engaging, hands-on safety centre

  • Meet new people and enjoy a supportive, friendly environment

  • Learn new skills, stay active—and help save lives

Volunteering is flexible, fun, and no prior experience is needed. Full training is provided.
