Friday 17th October 2025

In our values assembly this week, we used our one of our Lyfta Storyworlds to find out about the work of Donya, a NASA engineer in the USA. We saw her place of work and found out how she had started on her journey to her incredible career at the age of ten. She also spoke about her respect for the her team of colleagues and our solar system as well as the scientific discoveries she was involved in making.

The winners of Values Certificates this week were Thalia, Harriet, Kamilla, Sumaya, Poppy, Adeeb, Ralph, Aoife, Henry, Yazid, Hoobie, and Robyn.

Tag Rugby

We took 3 Victoria Park teams to the tag rugby tournament at Broad Plain rugby club over the past 4 weeks. They improved week on week and were exceptional ambassadors for the school, showing perseverance, team spirit and great sportsmanship. One of our teams came 2nd out of 23 teams, and another won their individual league this week. Well done all!

Black History Month

Over the month of October we have been celebrating Black History Month across the school in our class and phase assemblies. In the lower years we have been talking about important Black British people who have impacted history. We have also been discussing how we are really lucky to have such a broad curriculum where black history is celebrated throughout the year.

Diwali Celebrations

On Monday 20th October it is Diwali! As a school we will be recognising this by learning about the festival of lights in whole school assembly and creating pieces of Diwali related art in our year groups. On Friday 24th October, all children are also invited to wear their celebration clothes to school instead of school uniform.

Reporting an Absence

We would like to streamline how we receive information from parents regarding absences.

Please can ALL absences be reported to the school phone line on 0117 9030343 and pressing option 1 to leave a message. Please do this before 9am or pop into the office.

Please DO NOT report an absence via the school gateway app, email or text message as these services are not regularly monitored in the morning and might not be picked up till later in the day.  You should only be reporting a absence via the main school email if you need to send proof of medical or visiting appointment or letters.

South Bristol Liveable Neighbourhoods Consultation

The consultation on the proposals for South Bristol Liveable Neighbourhoods (SBLN) continues until Thursday 30th October and can be accessed here. Please do respond with your views to this Bristol City Council consultation.

As a school we are broadly supportive of any proposals that improve the quality of life in our area. However, we have responded to the consultation raising some specific concerns about three details of the proposals that we would like to be taken in to account. These relate to:

  • The proposed residents’ paid parking scheme in the Windmill Hill zone which could cause a potential problem for school staffing and recruitment given how many of our staff do not live locally
  • Using St John’s Road as a “connector road” which could further increase traffic, congestion and pollution on this road by our school
  • Installing a bus gate on St Luke’s Road as part of the proposals for Totterdown which could further increase traffic, congestion and pollution on this road by our school

VPPS Parents & Smartphones: you are not alone!

As parents, we know it’s a tricky subject that each family will navigate in a way best for them. Most importantly there are loads of resources to support you to make informed choices and not feel like you are alone

This is a helpful blog post from 5 minute mum about her new year 7 kid and phones https://fiveminutemum.com/advice-and-tips/getting-our-child-a-phone

The Parent Pact is a way to join together with other families at Victoria Park Primary choosing not to get their kids a smart phone or access to social media whilst in our primary school: https://forms.gle/Cs3YpLmTQmdGidix7 . This is a new one for the 2025/26 academic year, so please sign again if you signed last year, or join the growing numbers and sign for the first time.
