Term 4 - Light and Shadow

Our Year 3 Enquiry is all about light and shadow. We have already learned quite a bit but if you need a refresher, here is a good link about light and shadow.

Key questions are:

  • How do we see?
  • How are shadows formed?
  • How do shadows change?

Scroll down for your challenge to create a shadow puppet show!

Week 2 Enquiry challenges

We are very aware people have different demands on their time and resources at the moment so please pick and choose what works for you from the activities below.

The main questions to think about this week are:

  • How do shadows change?
  • How can we stay safe in the sun?

TASK 1 – How Do Shadows Change?

For this lesson you will need to carry out an investigation. If you have made a shadow puppet theatre you can use that as you will already have everything you need.

You will need:

  • A dark(ish) room
  • A solid object (e.g pen, toy, tin of beans, shadow puppet)
  • A light source – a lamp or torch

Using these things can you answer these questions:

  1. What happens when you move the light source closer to the object?
  2. What happens when you move the light source further away?
  3. What happens to the shadow when you tilt the light source up and down?
  4. On a sunny day you see your shadow on the ground. Why?
  5. Do you think your shadow changes during the day? Why?

Write and draw your observations in a similar way to this sheet:

OUTDOOR SCIENCE – take your learning outside and make your own sundial! Choose a sunny day and you can mark the time on paper or with chalk:

We’d love to see your sundials so please send us a photo!

TASK 2 - Sun Safety

Watch this presentation and write down facts about sun safety as you are reading it.

You can either:

  • Design a sun hat or sun glasses to protect you from the sun (templates provided below)
  • Design an information leaflet warning people about the dangers of the sun and giving them tips on staying safe (use a blank piece of paper and make it your own!)

TASK 3 – hand shadow puppets

Watch the hand puppeteer in this video clip. How many different animals does he make? Can you work out how he does it? How does he make the shadows bigger? How does he make the shadows smaller?

Have a go at making your own shadow animals! There is a video clip here you can use and a sheet below which is also in French so you can practise your language skills and science at the same time!

Making a Shadow Puppet Theatre

You can base your show on our Literacy text The Tin Forest or use a different story you know or you could even make up your own story!

Here and here are a couple of links to help you come up with ideas.

Here is one Mrs Walker made. You just need a cereal box and a piece of white paper...

We'd love to see your creations so please email us to share what you have been doing -  photos and videos welcome too!

Ideas for extra things you could do with your puppet show:

  • Make a poster advertising your show
  • Make tickets for your family and pets to come and see your show
  • Draw a picture of your main character and write about them round the outside
  • Create a second play with a different story
  • Write a report about your show once you have performed it

Here are the Pingu and Britain's Got Talent shadow clips we watched in class as a little treat for all your hard work!!
