A book all about representing numbers in a different way.

Term 6 Week 1

 

One is a Snail. Ten is a Crab

 

This week we are using this book as the inspiration for our Maths.

We are thinking about representing numbers in different ways. Normally we use the numerals 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and 9 to represent amounts but this week we are going to try and think of new ways to show an amount. 

 

In the book 1 is a snail and 6 is an insect

Can you work out how many legs?

Can you think of a new way to represent the numbers 1 to 10?

In the book, they have used how many feet on an animals but you could use anything you like.

Can you draw your ideas? You can use the grid below if that helps.

Now you can make up some number problems using your ideas.

Can someone else in your home solve your problems? You had better check they got them correct!

Patterns

A repeating pattern should have ‘rules’ so we should be able to predict what comes next.

 

We have looked at repeating patterns before. We used 2 colours alternately like this...

This week we will explore making more complicated patterns. You could use 2 colours/ objects. Can you work out what would come next in my pattern?

Or you could try 3 colours .

  

You can make up patterns of actions like when we sing ‘Head Shoulders Knees and Toes’

You can create ‘Staircase patterns’. These also occur in stories like The Enormous Turnip, The gingerbread man, There was an old woman who swallowed a fly, The twelve days of Christmas and books such as the Hungry Caterpillar and many others.

An important part if pattern making is being able to explain and describe your pattern.
