Happy New Year to everybody and welcome back. We wish we could be welcoming everybody back to school this term, and thank you all for your continued determination and resilience, whether your children are coming in, or now learning from home. In case you missed it, you can watch Mr Bailey’s assembly from the first day of term here.

Critical Workers and Restricting School Attendance During Lockdown

We are finding ourselves in an increasingly challenging position in relation to being able to provide places within the school building. As you know, in order to reduce the risk of infection both in school and the wider community, the Government has instructed that only vulnerable children and the children of workers who are critical to the coronavirus response may attend school. At the same time, schools are expected to restrict attendance to only the absolutely necessary level during the lockdown.

We have had a large number of families who have requested critical worker places for their children. This means we are having to make difficult decisions about how to safely remain open for children who absolutely have to be in school, increasing our capacity to provide high quality learning and feedback to the majority of our children who are learning at home and giving our usual high levels of pastoral support to families. With this in mind, if you have made a request for place in school please can you carefully consider if you absolutely need that place. For example, if you are working from home or have another adult in the household who is not a critical worker we hope that you have fully considered home schooling your child and are only sending them into school because you have no alternative.

Free mobile data increase and 4G routers for disadvantaged families

The school may now be able to help disadvantaged families to access free mobile data increase or 4G wifi routers provided by the Department of Education. There are criteria for this and the school will need to apply on behalf of eligible families. We will be contacting families who we know may be eligible for this scheme. However, if you think this might apply to you and you have not been contacted by the school please speak to the office to discuss further.  More detailed information on this is at

Laptop and tablet donations

We are welcoming any donations of laptops or tablets that you are no longer using so that we can pass them on to families who don't currently have access to the home learning. If you do have one (or more) you can donate, please contact the office to arrange dropping them off.  We are extremely grateful for those of you who have kindly already done this - we promise we will put them to good use!

Phonics Screening Check, Year 2 SATs and Year 6 SATs cancelled

Although it didn’t make the headlines, the Secretary of State for Education confirmed this week that the statutory assessments in years 1, 2 and 6 will not be going ahead this year. (The Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check has also been made optional, although this was announced last month.)  We may be asked to provide teacher judgements on pupils' abilities at the end of the academic year, and are being encouraged to use past test materials as a useful resource to help with that, however the formal testing will not take place.

Accessing the internet from multiple devices

Did you know you can also access our school website (and therefore our home learning pages) from a Playstation or an Xbox? This may help with home learning. There are plenty of user guides out there; a quick Google search for “how to access the internet from my Xbox” will get you started.

Friends of Victoria Park Primary School

PTFA Meeting
The PTFA exists to raise money, build community and help enrich our children’s education. Our next meeting – open to anyone with a child at the school – will be held on Zoom from 8:30-9:30pm on the Thursday 14 Jan. You’ll need the Meeting ID (860 8965 7346) and Passcode (VPPS) to dial in. This term we’ll be focusing on how we can help build the school community - so whether you’ve got ideas to share, or you’d just like to listen in, we’d love to see you!

Share Your Hobby Online
Have you got a skill or hobby that you’d like to share? The PTFA are considering running some short online workshops in the New Year – with the dual aim of raising money and helping parents connect with each other. But…we need YOUR help! Perhaps your secret talent is jewellery making? Or maybe origami is your thing? Have you always fancied yourself as a TV chef? Well now’s your chance! If you have a skill or hobby that you’d like to share, please contact

Regular Giving
Several people have asked whether it's possible to set up a regular gift to contribute to the work of the Friends of Victoria Park Association. If you'd like to support us in this way, you can set up a one-off or regular donation here:
You can give as much or as little as you like: even a regular gift of just £2/month would really help during these difficult times. Every penny goes towards supporting the school, helping to supplement their work by funding those little extras which aren't covered by the school budget - theatre performances, "play-in-a-week", forest school resources, school trips, IT for homework club, and much more.

I would like to extend my personal thanks and admiration to our school staff who have experienced a week like no other. We too recognise the incredible job that you are doing at home. Those values of cooperation, determination and kindness will see us through.
