Friday 27th November 2020

What a fantastic week it's been here at Victoria Park Primary School! It was lovely to celebrate reading and story telling on Wednesday (whilst wearing our comfy pyjamas). Some people have even suggested that it should be our new school uniform...

Reception and Year 1 were lucky enough to have a video call from a mermaid! Her name was Lindsey Cole and she is the author of the story book 'The Mermaid and the cow'.  She swam the Thames, collected rubbish on her way and even saved a cow!  If you would like to find out more about her or to purchase her book, please visit https://www.lindseycole.co.uk/ and choose 'school events' in the shipping section for free postage.  The children had great fun listening to her story and then making their own mermaids using rubbish and scrap!

Christmas Dinner

We are pleased to let you know that this year our Christmas meal in school will be on Wednesday 16th December.  The menu is provided below; there will be both vegetarian and Halal options available too.  Bookings for Christmas meals is now open on the Gateway and you can book earlier than usual.  Please note there will be no jacket potato or sandwich options on this date. If you do not wish for your child to have a Christmas dinner on this day, they should bring a packed lunch and will still be able to sit with their class.

As this is a popular school lunch we do need the orders in advance to give Vicky, the school cook, enough time to order the food.  This year we have reduced the payment limit for school dinners booking to £2.15 for this weekend only, so all pupils who want a Christmas dinner can pay for just this one day.

Please make this booking by SUNDAY 29th NOVEMBER.

How to book:
School gateway website - Choose child's name > select lunch money>Select end date 16th December>Select make or View Meal booking>Choose Christmas Meal option for Wednesday 16th December>Confirm Booking.

School gateway app - Choose child's name > select lunch money>Select make or View Meal booking>Scroll the top date bar across to find Wednesday 16th December>Choose Christmas Meal option for 16th December>Confirm Booking.

Christmas Cracker Appeal

The PTFA exists to raise money, build community and help enrich our children’s education. We’re really disappointed not to be able to run our Winter Fayre this year; it’s one of the highlights of the term and a great way of connecting with the wider school community. 2020 has been really tough for many families connected with the school. At our last PTFA meeting (which are open to all parents) we discussed ways of bringing a little joy to the classroom – I’m sure you’ll agree that this is even more important this year, when many traditional festive events aren’t able to go ahead. We decided to give each class £100 to help make this Christmas one to remember. Each class will decide for themselves what they’d like to spend their money on. This is a great way to help our children develop their wider social skills: decision making, project planning and budgeting – we can’t wait to see what they come up with! We normally make several thousand pounds for the school at our Winter Fayre, so every penny counts. You can donate to our Christmas Cracker appeal here. Thank you to everyone who’s already made a donation (39 people at the time of writing) and helped us get halfway to our goal of £1,400 in less than a week!
Next PTFA Meeting
PTFA meetings are open to anyone with a child at the school. If you’d like to hear about our latest projects, or have YOUR say in how the PTFA could better support the school, why not come along to our next meeting at 8:30pm-9:30pm on Thursday 10 Dec by Zoom? (Meeting ID: 875 8335 7853, Passcode: PTFA). All VPPS parents, guardians and carers are welcome – we’d love to hear your views!

Service Pupil Premium

If you are a parent or carer who is in the armed services your child may be eligible for service pupil premium (SPP). Pupils attract SPP if they meet one of the following criteria:

  1. one of their parents is serving in the regular armed forces (including pupils with a parent who is on full commitment as part of the full time reserve service)
  2. one of their parents died whilst serving in the armed forces and the pupil receives a pension under the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme or the War Pensions Scheme

If you think this criteria may apply to you please speak to the school office this term so they can register your child for the SPP as part of the school census in January.

Clean Air Consultation

We have received a letter from Bristol City Council which announces an extension to the deadline for their consultation period relating to the proposed "clean air zone". Please click on the document below for details.

There have been a range of reactions to the news that Bristol will be entering "Tier 3" next week.  We hope you have been able to reach out to someone in your community with this week's "Community Day" task, and we wish you all continued strength and resilience.  Take care.
