BBC Radio Bristol

On Monday morning this week, Daisy and May from The Green Team came into school early and took part in a live broadcast with BBC Radio Bristol about the zero waste challenge, our green team, and about recycling. Both girls did an excellent job, showed real confidence and represented the school well. Here is a recording of the live broadcast for you to listen to.

Celebration of Autumn

Following our announcement in last week's newsletter, we would like to invite you to hear children in all year groups singing autumn songs or performing autumn poetry. We will keep the performances outside and informal, so that we can enjoy the songs whilst being mindful of continued safety control measures. We have timed the performances so they are at the end of the day - this is so you can pick your children up from school straight afterwards, at the normal time.

Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6

  • Date: Wednesday 20th October
  • Time: 2:45pm
  • We will open the gates on Raymend Road and invite you to come to the middle playground.
  • After the performance, you are free to stay on the playground ready to collect children at 3:15pm as normal.

Reception, Year 1 and Year 2

  • Date: Friday 22nd October
  • Time: 2:45pm
  • We will open the gates on Raymend Road and invite you to come to the middle playground.
  • After the performance, you are free to move to the correct playground ready to collect children at 3:15pm as normal.

We will keep our fingers crossed for the weather. Unfortunately we will not be able to invite our audiences inside, so if it is raining heavily we will record a video of the songs instead. We hope you can come and join us!

Autumn Food Bank Collection

Don't forget you can support The Matthew Tree Project with our Autumn food bank collection. Children can donate long-lasting food and toiletries by bringing them into school - each classroom has a collection box. (Please check the use by/best before date on all food items.) Thank you in advance for your donations.

Bristol Schools Waste Nothing Challenge

We were very excited by some 'Zero Waster' Superheroes visiting our school last week to hang out with the Green Team. You might recognise a few faces here:

We could win £500!

Please bring your completed booklets back to school on Monday 18th October as this is the last day of the competition. The winning school will win £500 to make  our school even more 'eco' so please help us to win!

Year 2 Reading Meeting

The Year 2 team will be holding a meeting for parents and carers on Thursday 21st October to explain the Year 2 reading curriculum and to provide ideas for reading at home.
We will be hosting two meetings:

  • Thursday 21st October at 9:00am-9:45am
  • Thursday 21st October at 3:30pm-4.15pm

The meeting will be in the middle hall (next to the Year 2 classrooms) so you will be able to enter and exit through the Year 2 classrooms. All Year 2 parents and carers are welcome, but if you cannot make it we will video the meeting so you can watch it at home. There will be a creche available for the afternoon slot. We look forward to seeing you.

Safeguarding - Netflix

Many families use Netflix to watch programmes and movies. This information from National Online Safety explains how to protect your family from watching inappropriate content, as well as reduce the risk of hacking and help tackle screen addiction. If you have any concerns about what your child may be watching on television, please let us know.

Apply for a Secondary School place

If you are a parent of a child in Year 6, remember to apply for their secondary school place before the deadline of 31st October. You must apply even if you already have children at secondary school. You can call the office here for any advice. Please click this flyer for more details:

Poppy is back!

Poppy will be continuing her role as a buddy reader most Wednesday afternoons. Look out for her wearing her new school uniform neckerchief. Thank you to Janet Mills for kindly making it, and to Mrs Jones for sharing Poppy with us.

Tag Rugby

On Monday the VPPS mixed tag rugby team enjoyed another 4 games against a mixture of Bristol primary schools. The scores were really close as we drew two, lost one and finished on a high with a win. The team showed great determination especially by keeping their heads held high. They also showed kindness by reducing our team when the opposition had fewer players.
Overall, each team member has improved in each session and we are really looking forward to the final session next Monday. Well done VPPS tag rugby team!

Year 6 Tag rugby house competition

We played our first mini house competition in Year 6 in the penultimate session of learning tag rugby skills. For many children this was the first march they had played and each child showed determination, resilience and a growth mindset. When not playing, the teams observed the game and gave feedback plus acted as linesman - a job they took very seriously. Taking part in competitive games, and applying the basic principles of attacking and defending, is all part of the PE curriculum . Plus it's great to represent your house and have some fun.
The results are:

  • 1st place - More (7points)
  • Joint 2nd place - Aardman/Stephenson(5 points each)
  • 3rd place - Campbell (2points)

Wildlife News - Hedgehogs

The BS3 Hedgehog Project is one of several 'hedgehog groups' across the city. They have sent us their latest newsletter; other information about the group and about how to make a hedgehog house, what to feed your hog guests etc. It's an important time for hedgehogs as they bulk up ready for hibernation. Maybe a parent or family or group of children would like to be our school Hedgehog Champions and help us improve the grounds for our little spiky friends...?! Please contact Mrs Walker if you would like to help out.

Letter from the Secretaries of State for Education and Health

The Secretary of State for Education and the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care have written a joint letter to parents about the vaccination of children aged 12 to 15 and the importance of continuing with twice-weekly COVID-19 testing and reporting.

The letter provides information on COVID-19 testing and advises that, in response to potential outbreaks, local health teams may advise additional testing and isolation protocols at your school or college. For example, if a student or pupil is identified as a close contact by NHS Test and Trace, they may be asked to take daily lateral flow device (LFD) tests, while they wait for their PCR test result. In this scenario, they should continue to attend school or college as long as their LFD test results remain negative. Alongside the letter are some frequently answered questions for parents, from Dr Mary Ramsay, Head of Immunisation.

A copy of the letter is available to download

The end of term will soon be upon us, and we know all the children are looking forward to a short break from school. This first term seems to have flown by and everyone has made an excellent start to the year. You may remember at the start of September, we launched our new school vision and values. We are determined that everybody will know, remember and demonstrate our four values...can you remember what they are?
