Friday 15th January 2021

Thank you for your positive response to our home learning (or "remote learning") offer this week. To those of you at home (for all or part of the week) we would like to thank you for facilitating your child’s remote learning, and for the fantastic work you are doing balancing home-schooling with your own personal and work commitments. We appreciate this can present challenges and difficulties and we are very grateful for your efforts.

This time around, we are expected by the Department for Education to provide at least 3 hours of daily learning for pupils in KS1, and 4 hours per day for pupils in KS2. We understand that this is a shift in culture compared to previous remote learning and for some families this may be difficult to achieve, which is why our approach is designed to support you. At the moment our remote learning includes a mixture of tasks and recorded videos across a range of daily subjects. These may feature staff from school, as well as carefully selected resources from elsewhere. We feel the flexibility of recorded lessons is beneficial for children to work at their own pace and at a time that is suitable for each individual family. However we also understand the benefits of some "live" sessions for pupils to check in with their teachers, or connect with their peers. We are gradually introducing these into the remote learning offer, and more details will follow from class teachers.

As the weeks go by, we will gradually adapt our home learning offer and, as we are sure you're aware, we will need to retain some flexibility depending on staffing levels. We will always keep you fully informed of any changes we need to make. The remote learning provided will run parallel with the work children will be completing in school. Please take the opportunities to submit the indicated pieces of work to your class teacher each day so they can monitor and track how children are getting on.

We would love to hear what birds you have seen in your garden, from your window, or from your balcony, so please tweet us your pictures. You could make your own collection of crafty birds - there are loads of ideas on the internet but you could start with these:

PTFA Meeting

Many thanks to everyone who attended last night’s PTFA committee meeting; the minutes will be available on the PTFA Events Website in the next couple of weeks. This term we’ll be focussing on “building community” – we will be working to further strengthen the links between the PTFA and the school, and we’ve got some online events planned to help you connect with other families at the school during this challenging time. Watch this space for more details in next week’s newsletter!

Elder Class Rep

Our network of PTFA class reps do a great job of getting messages and reminders out to parents. It’s not an onerous job – once a week you’ll get a message from the PTFA and we just ask you to pass that on via your class WhatsApp or Facebook Group. We don’t currently have a class rep for Elder Class – if you’d like to volunteer (it’s literally less than 5 minutes commitment per week) then please send your name and mobile phone number to victoriapark.ptfa@gmail.com. Thank you.

Regular Giving
Thank you to everyone who’s already signed up to our regular giving scheme. If you’d like to make a small gift to contribute to the work of the Friends of Victoria Park Association, you can set up a regular donation here:

https://cafdonate.cafonline.org/15362

You can give us much or as little as you like. Even a regular gift of just £2/month would really help during these difficult times. Every penny goes towards supporting the school, supplementing their work by funding those little extras which aren't covered by the school budget - theatre performances, "play-in-a-week", forest school resources, school trips, IT for homework club, and much more.

Free online reading resources

Barrington Stoke produce books and resources to support "Dyslexic and Reluctant Readers" - we use them in school all the time. Click this link to see their free online resources including stories and activity packs.

Parent Gym

Take a look at this helpful website resource from parentgym.com which may provide a little support and respite during lockdown.

https://parentgym.com/workouts/

It has been lovely to connect with pupils currently learning at home, whether over the phone, via email or on Zoom. Look out for details coming next week about school assemblies, which we will aim to broadcast live so our community can still come together regardless of where they are learning from (starting with next week's Friday Celebration Assembly). Remember you can always see past assemblies on the home learning pages of the website too. Have a great weekend and take care.
