Friday 14th May 2021

Happy Eid to everyone celebrating this week! It was lovely to hear from some of our exceptionally talented Year 6 pupils from across the Cathedral Schools Trust primaries in our Iftar video last Friday.

Mental Health Awareness Week

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week, with the theme of Nature. Starting next week, it will be possible to meet more people outdoors, so why not take the opportunity to meet with friends (socially distanced, of course) and get out into nature?  For more ideas and information about connecting with nature, visit the Mental Health Foundation Website.

Online Safety

One of the best ways you can help to keep your children safe online is to ensure you have parental controls in place.  The following links have helpful advice on how to do this through your broadband providers and also through the devices themselves. Why not spend 5 minutes this weekend checking the settings on your children's devices to see they are still doing their job?

Park and Stride Location for VPPS - The Brunel Pub

In advance of our "Bristol School Streets" pilot scheme, Bristol City Council have organised a Park and Stride location for our families to use. This is a safe and agreed parking location you can use if you have no alternative to driving, but it keeps traffic away from our local streets. The address for the site is The Brunel Pub, 315 St John's Lane, Bedminster, BS3 5AZ. It’s only a 6 minute walk to school down St John’s Lane, or if you prefer to use quieter roads you can choose Kensal Avenue, as the map below shows:

Please use pedestrian crossings to get over St John’s Lane, there are two to choose from: either close to the pub by Mark Richard Insurance or next to our school. We are really grateful to The Brunel, who have kindly agreed to let our families use their car park for this purpose. They are excited to be reopening next week on 17th May - click here for their website.

Click on the document below for more information about walking to school. This 5-10 minute walking zone map shows how long it takes to walk to school from all directions.

Test and Trace Support Payments

Did you know that if you are asked to isolate by NHS Test and Trace, you might be eligible for a one-off payment of £500? With the next stage of the government’s road map restrictions set to be eased next week and more social contact expected, more people could be asked to isolate. As a result, they may be able to apply for a payment. The Department of Health and Social Care have made more funds available to support these awards, meaning more citizens may be eligible. PTFA Uniform Sales
Did you know that we have our own second-hand uniform shop? It’s the perfect place to donate any items that your child has outgrown, and buy the next size up at bargain prices! We’ve had a number of enquiries about summer uniform, so donations of summer dresses would be especially well received. But we’re always grateful for donations of skirts, trousers, shorts, plain jumpers and cardigans, tights and PE kit. We’re not able to take coats or trainers, but we are currently taking black school shoes (until the VPPS Green Team are able to re-start their ever-popular shoe exchanges). You can drop any donations at the school office (in a carrier bag clearly marked for the PTFA, please).

You can see what we’ve got in stock by browsing our dedicated PTFA Uniform Shop Facebook Page – if you’re interested in an item just send us a message via the page and we can arrange to get it to you at drop-off or pick-up. Prices start from £2 for a pair of trousers, £1 for skirts and 50p for shirts: since last Easter we’ve raised £150 from uniform sales alone!

Summer Raffle
We’ve got some fabulous prizes for our summer raffle, but we could always use more! If you work for a business that might be willing to donate a prize to our summer raffle, please let us know by sending an e-mail to – it’s a great way to support the school and garner some publicity for your business at the same time. We hope to start selling tickets for the raffle towards the end of May – keep your eye on this newsletter for more details.

Thank you for attending your Parents Evening video calls this week. We know that some people experienced technical issues and were unable to get connected, which is understandably frustrating. At the same time, we have received feedback from many families about how much they loved the School Cloud software, including those who have never been able to attend parents’ evenings in the past because of work commitments. We can't wait for parents’ evenings to be “back to normal” next year, and we will look into the possibility of a hybrid approach so we can offer a choice of face-to-face or video appointments.

Have a lovely weekend!
