Characteristics of effective learning

The Characteristics of effective learning.

We thought it might help you to know about how your child learns.

The Characteristics of effective learning underpin all the other areas of learning in Reception. They are all about how children learn and there are three elements.

  • Playing and exploring (engagement)– Children investigate and experience things, and ‘have a go’.
  • Active learning (motivation) – Children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties, and enjoy achievements.
  • Creating and thinking critically (thinking)– Children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things.

To enable children to be able to describe how they learn we have developed 3 dinosaurs which we talk about in class. You might find it helpful to refer to these.

Finding out and exploring.
Playing with what they know.
Being willing to ‘have a go.’

Enjoying achieving what they set out to do.
Being involved and concentrating.
Keep on trying.

  Having their own ideas.
  Making links.
  Choosing ways to do things.
